Heart failure is a common disorder, especially in the elderly, and is assuming major significance for both patients and healthcare systems. We need better identification of patients and more intensive attempts to introduce and maintain therapies for which there is a large evidence base. Given the burden of disease, however, prevention of heart failure is a priority and this requires formalized programs of cardiovascular prevention. © 2009 The Author.
