Topical resources
Given the coronavirus pandemic, we are all having to adapt to new ways of managing patient consultations. We've put together the following resources to help you implement the teaching of non face-to-face consultations.
Blog post:
Teaching non-face-to-face consultation
The last few weeks have given all of us a crash course in conducting telephone and video consultations, no matter what our previous experience. The Communication Skills team were ahead of the curve earlier this year, designing a pilot session for medical students in non-face-to-face consulting. GP Tutor Dr Suzanne Stewart describes the work she has done putting this new module together.
Video consulting in the NHS
Guidance and resources for NHS patients and clinicians to support online consultations.
These accessible guides and resources are available to anyone considering using video technology as part of an NHS consultation. They are designed to be relevant to any technology or clinical setting.
The guides have been developed as a collaboration between Barts Health NHS Trust and Design Science with the IRIHS Group, led by Professor Trish Greenhalgh and Professor Sara Shaw.

Awards for Teaching Excellence
Three of our tutors were 2019 recipients of the Medical Sciences’ Division Teaching Excellence Awards. Dr Helen Salisbury, Professor Carl Heneghan and Dr Suzanne Stewart have been recognised for their excellent contribution to teaching at the University of Oxford.
Dr Helen Salisbury and Professor Carl Heneghan have been given lifetime achievement awards, which recognise a sustained commitment to education throughout their career. Dr Suzanne Stewart, a GP Tutor based in Kidlington, is the recipient of an excellent teacher award.
Training Opportunities
Tutors' Conference
This is an annual meeting for all GP tutors who teach on our courses. It provides updates on what is happening in the primary care teaching department, as well as the medical school as a whole. It is a valuable opportunity to meet fellow tutors, discuss important issues and learn about new developments.
All tutors will receive an invitation once the upcoming conference date is confirmed. It is usually held in May or June.
Other educational events
Each course (for example, Patient and Doctor 1, Communication Skills, Year 5) has its own training events throughout the academic year. Tutors will be informed about these via email. If you would like any further information, please contact Dr Julian Hancock at julian.hancock@phc.ox.ac.uk.
