MARTIN LAWRENCE OXFORD–NORDIC MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Martin Lawrence Scholarship is an Oxford-Nordic exchange, giving students from Oxford and Denmark a unique opportunity to gain experience of primary care in each other’s countries. Every other year, either a student from Oxford will visit a city in Denmark, or vice versa.

The scholarship was set up in memory of Martin Lawrence, a former university lecturer and acting head of the Primary Care Department, who was an outstanding teacher of both students and fellow doctors. He had a lifelong commitment to medical education, both in the undergraduate and postgraduate setting, as well as strong links with the Nordic countries. When he died from cancer in 1999, aged just 55, it was felt that this Scholarship was an appropriate and lasting tribute.

The Academic Lead for GP teaching will notify Oxford students who are in Year 5 when it is Oxford’s year for a student to visit Denmark, along with details of how to apply for this scholarship. In the meantime if you are interested in knowing more please email julian.hancock@phc.ox.ac.uk.

Ellouise Bishop.jpgThe winner of the 2019 Scholarship was Oxford sixth-year student Ellouise Bishop. After finishing her Finals, she spent two weeks working in primary care in Aarhus, Denmark.

She had this to say about her experiences:

"In an exchange with the University of Aarhus, I spent 2 weeks at Lægefællesskabet, a GP practice in Grenå.  I had a really wonderful placement - all the doctors and staff were very welcoming. They were keen to get me seeing my own patients and let me assist in basic clinical duties such as blood taking. They had a unique set up with a supervisor GP and employing medical students part time which was interesting to see a different model at work. I felt like part of the team and learned a lot. Aarhus is a beautiful, cultural city surrounded by the forest and sea, with multiple museums and a vibrant food scene. I’m so grateful I got this opportunity and would recommend to any student keen on General Practice!"
