\n \n \n \nSelf-monitoring of blood pressure during pregnancy neither results in earlier detection of high blood pressure, nor helps with blood pressure control in those who are pregnant, suggest the results of two new papers based on research from the University of Oxford and King\u2019s College London (funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research).

\n \n \n \nFinal Honours student, Harrison France, from the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Science and the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, has recently been awarded 1st place in the the IUPHAR (International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology) Student Research Poster Competition 2022 by the British Pharmacological Society, for his research on preventable deaths involving medicines.

\n \n \n \nFrom today, the antiviral treatment Paxlovid has been included in the national PANORAMIC study, the UK\u2019s fastest ever recruiting clinical trial of its kind, run by the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences and supported by the National Institute for Health and Care research (NIHR).

\n \n \n \nProfessor Ben Goldacre publishes findings from an independent review to improve use of health data in NHS. Recommendations include increasing transparency and modernising software infrastructure to boost research whilst maintaining high security standards. The findings have already helped shape the Health and Social Care Data Strategy, being published later this year, which will set out a vision to make better use of data to save lives.

\n \n \n \nBanning prominent in-store displays of Easter eggs and seasonal confectionery could help reduce calories in shopping baskets, according to an independent evaluation by researchers at the University of Oxford. The team worked with a large UK food retailer who removed end-of-aisle and store entrance freestanding promotional displays of seasonal chocolate in a sample of stores, for seven weeks before Easter 2019. They found a significant attenuation of the usual seasonal increase in confectionery sales in these intervention stores compared to control stores.

\n \n \n \nFaecal immunochemical testing (FIT) alone leads to the identification of the same number of patients with colorectal cancer as more complicated approaches that combine the FIT result with the results of commonly used blood tests.

\n \n \n \nA bespoke website to support people to eat less meat helped frequent meat eaters to halve their meat consumption over just nine weeks. The trial, run by researchers in the Livestock, Environment and People (LEAP) programme at the University of Oxford, found the programme to be popular with participants who felt it supported them to change their dietary habits. The work is published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
