MUTHI (Multidisciplinary University Traditional Health Initiative)

MUTHI is an EU-funded project to strengthen capacity for research on traditional herbal medicines in African Universities

About the Workshop

MUTHI is organising a training workshop on clinical trials of herbal medicines which will be hosted by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in Durban, South Africa, from 2nd to 6th October 2013. It will be facilitated by researchers from the University of Oxford and the University of the Western Cape.

The workshop will cover the basics of setting the research question, designing a protocol, conducting a study, analysis and reporting. Participants will be asked to present their own ideas for a clinical trial, and will be supported to develop this into a full protocol.

Participants will be required to complete some online e-learning modules, read a few articles, and draft a protocol for their clinical study before the course. After the workshop, mentors will continue to support participants in the development of their protocols, applications for funding and ethical approval, and throughout the course of their research.

Who can attend?

This workshop is intended for African researchers who are involved in, or planning to become involved in, clinical research and development of traditional herbal medicines.  There are up to 25 places for African researchers. Places are free but participants will have to cover their own travel and accommodation while attending the training.
