Open Access Block Grant
As in previous years, RCUK/UKRI has granted an award to the University of Oxford for the year 2018/19 to fund publication charges for Open Access (OA) publications resulting from Research Council funded research (as described in its Open Access Policy https://www.ukri.org/funding/information-for-award-holders/open-access/open-access-policy/).
In brief, the University’s policy from 1st July 2018 is that our RCUK block grant will pay for:
- Article Processing Charges (APCs) in fully open access journals (in DOAJ); also hybrid (subscription) journals with a ‘green route’ embargo period longer than 6 months science/medicine, 12 months social science/humanities; and hybrid journals where Oxford has an offsetting deal (currently Springer ‘OpenChoice’).
- Certain non-APC charges (if non-payment would prevent publication) as before.
- The RCUK proportion of articles jointly funded by Wellcome/Charity Open Access Fund.
When to apply?
Authors are now asked to contact the Bodleian APC Team at the point of acceptance (not at article submission). This timing matches Wellcome Trust policy and Oxford’s Act on Acceptance instructions.
The policy applies to applications received from 1 July 2018. Applications which were made between 1 April - 30 June and declined are not eligible for re-consideration.
Full details are in the attached policy describing how the funds from this award will be allocated. The policy and a new application form will be added to the OA Oxford website (http://openaccess.ox.ac.uk/) which is currently being updated.
