Dr. Anne-Marie Boylan, Senior Researcher in the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine, featured in a BBC Panorama investigation examining menopause products and their scientific backing.

The programme, which aired on 30 September 2024 and on BBC iPlayer, delved into the growing market of products claiming to alleviate menopause symptoms. Dr. Boylan spoke to Kirsty Wark about the scientific evidence – or lack thereof – behind the claims made by some of these products.

“We looked at the individual sources of each of these claims to check whether or not they were academic papers, to check the trustworthiness of them and we used a series of established tools to assess their quality,” explained Dr Boylan in the interview.

She concluded, “we need more evidence about these products to enable women to make good choices.”.

Dr Boylan collaborated on the research into 15 menopause products with Dr Jamie Hartmann-Boyce, former EBHC DPhil Director within NDPCHS and now Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Management at University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The investigation highlighted the importance of rigorous scientific research in validating the efficacy of menopause treatments and the research team emphasize the need for consumers to be cautious and well-informed when considering these products.

The BBC Panorama feature has sparked a wider conversation about the regulation and marketing of menopause products. Dr. Boylan's participation in the programme underscores the vital role that academic researchers play in informing public health debates and policy decisions.
