Oxford International Primary Care Research Leadership Programme
Build, sustain and deliver effective and strengthened research leadership characteristics and performance.
About the programme
The Oxford International Primary Care Research Leadership Programme is designed for post-doctoral researchers who aspire to develop as leaders; keen to explore different aspects of leadership in primary care research and to develop a higher level of strategic operational skills.
Each year universities around the world are invited to nominate one candidate who has demonstrated the potential to become a future leader in primary care research.
Supports professional and personal development
The programme combines theory and practice and enables you to reflect on your own individual research setting. It also assists with the development of personal leadership skills and ways of working which are relevant to your own research career.
Expert-led
Established primary care research leaders and expert trainers will share their own insights and in-depth knowledge, enabling you to develop a toolbox of practical skills and frameworks to meet the challenges faced by your team and your organisation. This will support you to direct and achieve your research goals.
The programme was instigated in 2006 as part of the Brisbane Initiative and developed to fill an important gap in the professional development of academic primary care researchers. Having run successfully for several years, it relaunched in 2021 with a fully updated offering.
Programme curriculum
The programme is delivered over three sequential residential meetings in Oxford, held over a three-year period.
Across the three meetings, participants will experience seminars from leading experts, masterclasses, practical learning, small group reflective work, action learning sets and one-to-one coaching.
Each of the three meetings will have a central leadership theme running through it, stimulating thinking and discussion for the participants. The three themes are:
Meeting 1: Fundamentals of Research Leadership
Participants will learn understand leadership as a practical working idea, its impact, its goals and its effect. We will support individuals in learning more about their own leadership styles and its application.
Meeting 2: Organisational Research Leadership
Once participants have a deeper understanding of their leadership style, we will explore how this learning can be applied to those they lead, teams and wider research organisations.
Meeting 3: Strategic Research Leadership
In the final meeting, we will reflect on our learning and progression, and encourage the development of strategic leadership through enhanced skill development.
