My research is focused on the screening, early detection and primary care management of cardio-metabolic-renal disease. I believe there is an opportunity to detect cardiovascular disease at an earlier stage, allowing evidence-based interventions to be initiated that can help keep people healthy for longer and avoid or delay important cardiovascular outcomes, such as heart attacks and strokes. I also research combinations of common cardiovascular conditions, such as heart failure and atrial fibrillation, to help understand treatment options and outcomes in the context of multi-morbidity.
My previous work has included research into the diagnostic accuracy of NT-proBNP as a blood test for heart failure in primary care, including in high-risk groups such as those with atrial fibrillation (Diagnose-NP). I am a co-applicant on a research project look to develop a risk prediction score for heart failure in primary care (Risk-HF) and a co-applicant on a randomised controlled trial of screening for atrial fibrillation among high-risk patients in the community using Zio patch monitors (AMALFI). I have previously led on work looking at how long people survive with heart failure and how this is influenced by the presence of other important conditions, including atrial fibrillation and obesity. I have also been an investigator on a randomised trial of spironolactone in people with moderate chronic kidney disease to see if this treatment can help prevent cardiovascular outcomes (BARACK-D).
I have a Masters in Clinical Education from Newcastle University and teach nationally on the NB Medical GP Update course. I currently supervise three DPhil students and two Masters students as well as providing mentoring and teaching to undergraduate medical students and junior colleagues.
