My research addresses the practical challenges of delivering evidence based primary health care in the modern NHS environment. I am particularly interested in the potential of routinely collected data to influence practice at the point of care, through innovative tools including software interventions.
I am also interested in developing the evidence base for established interventions that we may take for granted. A recent example included the HTA funded ESTEEM trial (led by University of Exeter Medical School) which has investigated alternative triage arrangements for managing requests for same day appointments in general practice.
I am currently leading a large cluster randomised trial of an automated reminder intervention to promote uptake of oral anticoagulants in eligible individuals with atrial fibrillation and at risk of stroke. This is funded by NIHR (£610,000) and involves a collaboration between the Universities of Oxford, Birmingham and Nottingham, the NHS, and the clinical software supplier EMIS. It is supported by NHS Improvement, Arrhythmia Alliance and the Atrial Fibrillation Association, and includes a qualitative process evaluation involving users of the reminder system and patients whose care has been influenced by it.
