Ushma Galal

I joined the Clinical Trials Unit as a Medical/Trials statistician in April 2016. Prior to joining the PC-CTU, I worked as a Statistical Consultant at the University of Cape Town and as a Biostatistician at the South African Medical Research Council, where I completed a Master’s Degree in Genetic Epidemiology.

Until 2019, the major part of my role here involved providing statistical support to the Oxford Vaccine Group, which falls under the Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine (CCVTM). While there, I worked on both adult and paediatric studies centred on studying immune response to vaccines for encephalitis, typhoid and paratyphoid, meningitis, pneumonia and influenza.

I am currently working on a large multi-country observational study on COVID antimicrobial resistance, trials in penicillin allergy testing, diabetes and weight-loss, and doing drug and device trials with the Department of Psychiatry. I have also been involved in the PRINCIPLE and PANORAMIC trials conducted by the CTU over the course of the COVID pandemic.
