Anthony Harnden is Professor of Primary Care, General Practitioner and Fellow of St Hugh's College. He has research interests in infections and paediatrics in primary care, specifically common childhood infections, vaccine preventable infections and the early diagnosis of rare but important childhood diseases.
He was appointed to the GMC Council as a board member in 2017. The GMC is responsible for the regulation of all UK doctors and UK medical schools. Professor Harnden is currently Chairman of the GMC Remuneration Committee. He is an editorial advisor for the British Medical Journal series ‘Easily Missed?
He was Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Primary Care Health Sciences 2017-2022, the primary care lead for the Confidential Enquiry in Child Deaths in 2008 and chaired a group which developed a Child Health strategy for the Royal College of General Practitioners 2010-15.
He was the GP member of the Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) 2006 - 2024 and Deputy Chairman 2015 -2024. JCVI advises the UK government on vaccine policy, including the Covid-19 vaccination programme.
