DPhil Stipends

The department is committed to ensuring that all students holding financial awards to fund their DPhils benefit from a practical minimum level of stipend. Many awards offer stipends at the standard UKRI minimum level; however the department recognises that Oxford can be an expensive place to live and so is committed to topping-up stipends. Our policy is to follow the UKRI inside London minimum (pro rata for part-time students); for the period 2023/24 to 2025/26 UKRI did not state an inside London rate so the department calculated an increase in our minimum level based on the increase in the UKRI outside London level. From 2026/27 UKRI have resumed publishing an inside London rate that we can follow. Stipends that already meet this minimum will not be topped-up by the department. This policy was implemented from April 2021.

Department minimum stipend:

2023/24 - £20,775
2024/25 - £21,415
2025/26 - £23,133

UKRI inside London levels:

2026/27 - £23,805

Research Training & Support Grant (RTSG)

All students who do not have a RTSG within their funding award can claim up to a maximum of £5,000 from the department for this purpose over the lifetime of their studies. Students who have a RTSG within their award that does not total £5,000 over the lifetime of their studies can apply for the difference if required. These funds must be applied for via the Graduate Studies Team (graduate.studies@phc.ox.ac.uk) using the form Application form_Conference and Research Funds for PGRs.

Publications

The university has agreements with some publications to waive the fee; please check through the pages here: https://openaccess.ox.ac.uk/

In addition to the RTSG above, students can also claim a contribution towards publications:
