When i use a word.... Unnecessary, hateful, sickening words
Aronson JK.
Among many pairs of words that can be confused with one another, odious and otiose are currently of interest. "Odious"means disagreeable, hateful, repugnant, or offensive. "Otiose"simply means unnecessary. In his resignation letter as Boris Johnson's ethics adviser on 15 June 2022, Lord Geidt described his position as "odious."One wonders if he also found his boss otiose. This brings to mind the confusion that can occur between "nauseous"and "nauseated"; the latter means feeling sick, the former sickening.
