Risk of stroke in men is not associated with dietary fat intake
Question. Is risk of stroke in men associated with fat intake, type of fat or cholesterol? Study design. Prospective cohort study with 14-year follow-up. Main results. There were 725 strokes during follow-up (455 ischaemic, 125 haemorrhagic and 145 'unknown type'). Intake of total fat, or any type of fat was not associated with risk of ischaemic, haemorrhagic or total stroke when adjusted for age and smoking status (p ≥0.16). Multivariate analysis adjusting for body mass index, hypertension and alcohol consumption, did not show an association between dietary fat intake and risk of stroke (p ≥ 0.20). Authors' conclusions. Total amount and type of fat intake is not associated with risk of stroke in men. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
