The building bridges project: Involving older adults in the design of a communication technology to support peer-to-peer social engagement
Wherton J., Prendergast D.
There are a variety of factors that can lead to social isolation and loneliness in old age, including decline in physical and mental health, as well as change to social environment. The Building Bridges project explores how communication technology can help older adults remain socially connected. This paper will first provide an overview of a prototype communication system designed to support peer-to-peer group interaction. A description of the usercentered design process will be provided to demonstrate the importance of involving older adults at the earliest stages. The implications for designing new technology for older adults are discussed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.
