d3food aims to understand how changes to the food system affect the foods that people buy.


Every day, the UK is fed by a network of shops, manufacturers, caterers, transporters, farmers, customs officials, environmental health officers, tech companies and many others. This complex food system produces diets that are often high in saturated fat, salt and sugar, low in fruit and vegetables, and responsible for unsustainable levels of environmental damage. The food system does not serve all people well in the UK, with disadvantaged groups less likely to access healthy, nutritious foods.

d3food is a group of researchers from Oxford, LeedsSouthamptonLondon School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the The George Institute for Global Health. Our goal is to understand how changes to the food system affect the foods that people buy, including government policies and major events (such as the coronavirus pandemic). We will work with the public and the food industry to design and test changes to shops and websites, and build new tools to support people when they buy food. 


By sharing our experiences we can make changes that can help everyone. We are currently recruiting for a research panel, which will guide the project and help to design and test ways to improve healthy food purchasing.
