Exploring vaping and later smoking in young people: an evidence mapping and synthesis programme
Does vaping influence smoking in young people? Our research tried to answer this question.
Electronic cigarettes have become very popular over the last decade. There are concerns regarding whether they may influence young people to smoke. It is important that any policy decisions surrounding this topic can be informed by high quality scientific evidence. With support from Cancer Research UK , we developed a programme of research exploring this issue.

Vaping and later smoking in young people: A systematic review
Mapping evidence looking at vaping and later smoking in young people
Recommendations for future research looking at vaping and later smoking in young people
We developed a set of 23 recommendations for conducting and reporting of future studies on e-cigarette use and later cigarette smoking in young people (≤29 years), including recommendations for planning, collecting data, analysing data and reporting. We have also considered health equity aspects. These recommendations are based on our evidence and gap map, systematic review, and consultations with experts in the field.
You can see our recommendations in our published paper.
HOW DOES THIS RESEARCH TRY TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM?
We conducted an evidence and gap map, a systematic review bringing together studies exploring the link between vaping and later smoking in young people (≤ 29 years), and developed a set of recommendation for future research exploring this public health issue.
HOW WERE THE PUBLIC INVOLVED?
Members of the public gave input on the funding application for the programme; and on defining its scope.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN AIMS OF THIS PROJECT?
The aims of this project were to:
- Produce an evidence and gap map offering an interactive graphic overview of the research exploring e-cigarettes use or access and later cigarette smoking in young people
- Conduct a systematic review of the studies exploring e-cigarettes use or access and later cigarette smoking in young people
- Develop a set of recommendation for the conduct and reporting of future report exploring this topic, based on our EGM and review findings and consultations with experts.
Expected Impact
This package of work can be used to support decision-making and future research in this field.
