HURAPRIM
HURAPRIM (Human Resources for Primary Care in Africa)
The Department of Primary Care Health Sciences is collaborating with universities in five African countries (Mali, Sudan, Uganda, Botswana and South Africa) and in two European countries (Belgium and Austria) to find solutions to the lack of human resources for delivering effective primary health care in Africa.
We have led literature reviews and participatory research in the participating African countries. We are also leading a confidential enquiry into maternal and child deaths in Mali and Uganda, to understand the key priorities for improving the health system. In Europe, we are leading a qualitative study of health workers who have migrated from Africa. The key message from this research is that quality of care is as important as quantity of health workers. Achieving WHO targets for numbers of staff is no guarantee of an adequate standard of care or of meeting the health-related Millennium Development Goals.
