Emily Owen-Boukra

BA (Hons), PhD, FRSPH

Research Fellow

I am a realist research methodologist with an academic background in primary care and public health. To date, my research has focused on disadvantaged populations, inequalities, lifestyle medicine, and primary care organisation/design.

Prior to joining Oxford, I held Post-Doctoral Research Associate positions at Durham University, Umeå University, and University College London. During my role at Durham, I contributed to a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional project that examined the impact of integrated care systems on the health and well-being of children and young people. At Umeå, I was involved in a realist review exploring how multi-component (re)engagement interventions may meet the needs of young people in vulnerable ‘NEET’ situations.

At UCL, I worked on two NIHR SPCR funded realist review projects. The first realist review explored collaborative and integrated (C+I) working between Community Pharmacies (CP) and General Practice (GP). Throughout this project, strong collaborative relationships were established with patient co-applicants, across UCL and Oxford Primary Care, and UCL School of Pharmacy, facilitating the production of nuanced, impactful findings necessary to not only advance our understanding of CP-GP C+I working but also provide solutions for overcoming challenges, and recommendations for the design of future C+I care models. The second realist review examined general practitioner workforce sustainability, focusing on the factors that maintain, sustain, and enable general practitioners to flourish in their work. Currently, I am collaborating with colleagues from the UK and Sweden on several realist projects at Oxford.

I am a member of the Evidence Synthesis Working Group, working with primary care researchers, clinicians, methodologists, and information specialists across all nine SPCR School members.
