Magnus Hamann
Qualitative Researcher
I am a linguist investigating social interaction using qualitative methods and conversation analysis (in particular). I have specialised in developing evidence-based training material for professional practices, and I have previously created evidence-based training for the NHS, UK police forces, in addition to private companies, charities, and organisations.
I am placed in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences where I investigate the types of interaction that unfolds between healthcare professionals and patients.
Research
Currently, I work on the Health Weight Coaches research project aiming to better understand and support conversations about health (in general) and weight management (in particular) in healthcare settings. This research project is aimed at supporting primary care professionals in having health conversations.
As a researcher, I am interested in how 'agreement' of what is going on is achieved in interaction. I am interested in how people achieve intersubjectivity - shared understanding of the moment in the moment - through both what is traditionally considered linguistic resources (phonetics, grammar, and lexical choice) as well as a range of other meaningful semiotic resources (cultural knowledge, inferences, gestures, gaze, and omission).
Teaching
I hold a Senior Fellowship at the Higher Education Academy and have previously taught modules for UG, PG and doctoral students on:
- Qualitative Methods
- Conversation Analysis and Social Interaction
- Linguistic (Phonetics and Phonology, Semantics, Pragmatics, and 'Morphosyntax')
- Psychology and Social Psychology
- Sociology and discourses of Mental Health and Disability
- Communication theories and practice
- Practical workshops on dissertation writing (UG and Doctoral dissertations).
I am, though, currently not teaching.
