I am a statistician working in the Applied Digital Health theme of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for Oxford and Thames Valley. My current research focuses on identifying safety issues following interventional procedures. Recent high profile safety concerns following pelvic mesh implants, and the subsequent Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review chaired by Baroness Cumberlege, have highlighted the need for better long-term vigilance following surgical and other interventional procedures. We hope our work will be a step forward in this regard. One approach we are exploring is the use of primary care data linked with hospital data to identify complications that patients report to their GP months or years after surgery.
