September 2025 – Launch of NEXUS
NEXUS, a new international research partnership funded by the UK Medical Research Council (MRC), launched in September 2025 to investigate the health impacts of non-exhaust vehicle emissions — particles generated by brake wear, tyre wear and road surface abrasion. As exhaust emissions decline worldwide, these largely unregulated particles are becoming an increasingly important source of traffic-related air pollution, particularly in urban environments. Bringing together a consortium of 17 academic institutions and eight partner organisations, NEXUS will combine expertise from fields including aerosol science, toxicology, epidemiology, data science and health policy to strengthen research capacity, advance understanding of non-exhaust emissions, and generate the evidence needed to inform future environmental and public health policy.
