I am a medical sociologist and registered nurse with an interest in the public’s understanding of health sciences and technologies. I have expertise in relation to the nature of patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) in health sciences knowledge generation, and qualitative research methods. Notable research projects include the transnational PARADIGM project (Patients Active in Research and Dialogues for an Improved Generation of Medicines) in which multiple stakeholders co-designed a toolkit for evaluating the value of patient engagement in medicines development; the Waiting Room project that engaged the public in biobank regulation; PACFiND (PAtient-centred care for Fibromyalgia: New pathway Design) that co-produced principles of care for people with fibromyalgia.
Teaching and Supervision
I have extensive experience of curriculum development and teaching, learning and assessment in higher education, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Professional Education. I teach on a number of postgraduate modules in the Department and have contributed to the curriculum development for the MSc in Translational Health Sciences. I am the developer and leader of the Patients, Citizens and the Politics of Evidence module on the MSc Translational Health Sciences.
I supervise and examine doctoral students undertaking qualitative research in health care settings and/or with health-concerned communities.
