Applications and Pre-award information
First time applicants
- Please inform the grants team as early as possible about your application.
- Identify who needs to approve the application as early as possible. This may include head of department approval, ethics committee approval, NHS approval etc. The approvals you need are normally visible in the application system you are using. If you cannot find this ask the grants team for help. Occasionally applications cannot be submitted because not all approvals have been requested with enough time.
- Use the costing prompt to help identify which costs you need to include.

Other notes on applications
- Although many applications involve a single budget figure at the first stage, it is still necessary to do a full costing to be approved by research services.
- The internal deadlines for overseas funders (e.g. EC, NIH) is different than standard applications. Please contact the grants team as soon as possible to get the actual deadlines for your application.
- A small number of funding calls are coordinated and have an institutional cap on the number of applications.
Head of Department support documents
Please approach Professor Chris Butler (rather than Professor Sir Aziz Sheikh) for Head of Department Letters of Support on grant applications etc as he is our Interim Associate Head of Research. Please also add Chris as the HoD sign off in your online applications /portals and send him a draft application in advance so he can consider for relevance.
