NEW EMPLOYEE'S AND MANAGER'S GUIDANCE FOR INDUCTION AND PROBATION
PROBATION
The processes for probation periods are run in the department as follows:
- Upon commencement of employment the line manager sets the objectives in discussion with the employee
- Regular meetings should be held between the line manager and employee throughout the probation period to discuss progress, review objectives and identify and training requirements
- Line managers are contacted by HR once the employee reaches 3 months service in post with a reminder about holding regular review meetings
- Line managers are contacted by HR ahead of the employee reaching their probation period mid-term date to inform them that the formal review meeting needs to be held, the mid-term review form is completed and submitted to HR by the line manager after they have agreed the content with the employee
- Line Managers are contacted by HR once the employee reaches 9 months service in post with a further reminder about holding regular review meetings
- Line managers are contacted by HR ahead of the employee reaching their probation period end to inform them that the formal review needs to be held, the final review form is completed and submitted to HR by the line manager after they have agreed the content with the employee
- On successful completion of the probation period the employee receives a formal letter from HR confirming them in post and that they now move into Personal Development Review
Line Managers should address any performance issues with the employee as soon as possible and informally initially. If formal action is required please get in touch with HR as soon as possible.

Probation Periods
Staff Type | Contract Duration | Standard Probation Period |
Support staff (Grades 1 - 5) | 7 months* or greater | 6 months |
Academic Related Staff (Grades 6 and above) | 13 months* or greater | 12 months |
Staff transferring from other University departments and staff already working in PHC moving to a new role | A probation period will not normally apply please check with HR |
* For contracts less than this duration the probation period is half the duration of the contract
