Secondments
Secondments are where an employee of another department or an external employer takes up an appointment with the department for a period of time but retains their underlying position and will return to that position at the end of the period.
Secondments of staff from other departments are managed by the HR Teams of each department who will provide the secondment agreement. Access is provided as per the New Starter processes.
There are a two options for offering how a secondment of an externally employed individual will be managed.
- Secondee takes a break in employment from their substantive employer and they are employed directly by the department under a University contract
- Secondee remains employed with their substantive employer while for the department. The substantive employer invoices the department for their salary costs
A secondee may be identified through a recruitment process. If you wish to second a specific individual without advertising as they offer particular expertise HR will be able to advise if this is possible. In all cases no offer of a secondment can be made until the funding for the role has been approved.
