With overall responsibility for graduate affairs in the department, Professor Harnden will provide academic leadership, oversight, administration and advocacy for the department’s graduate students, and will chair the Graduate Studies Committee.

He takes over from Associate Professor Alison Ward, who recently left the department to relocate to Australia.

Currently Professor of Primary Care in the department, Anthony also holds a position as senior partner at Morland House Surgery in Wheatley. He was first appointed to a University Lectureship in General Practice in 2001, followed by a Governing Body Fellowship of St Hugh’s College in 2002.

His research interests are in primary care paediatrics, specifically common childhood infection, vaccine preventable infection, the early diagnosis of serious disease and clinical trials in children.

Commenting on his initial priorities as DGS, Professor Harnden said:

“I am delighted to be appointed the new Director of Graduate Studies in our Department. We currently have a small but talented group of DPhil students, who I intend to meet individually this term to listen to thoughts on how we can improve their academic experience and pastoral support.

“By encouraging more project opportunities from supervisors, enhancing the academic experience and increasing the number of potential funding opportunities I hope that we will be able to attract many more able DPhil students who want to pursue a career in primary care research – it's so important to sustain the future of our discipline.”

Outside of Oxford University, Anthony is a GP member and deputy chairman of the Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation. He is also an editorial advisor for the BMJ’s ‘Easily Missed’ series and was recently appointed to the GMC Council.
