Dr Jeffrey Aronson has been awarded an honorary fellowship by the British Pharmacological Society at a London ceremony in December 2014.
Honorary fellowships are the highest honour bestowed by the BPS and are awarded to individuals distinguished for their sustained leadership role in science.
Dr Aronson is currently a Reader in Clinical Pharmacology in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. His research focus is mainly on methods of classifying, detecting, and reporting adverse drug reactions, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and the evidential use of anecdotal reports.
He also teaches medical students and is a member of a number of influential national boards and committees, including an appraisal committee of the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Advisory Board of the British National Fomularies. He chairs the British Pharmacopoeia Commission's Expert Advisory Group on Nomenclature.
Among his other contributions, the Honorary Fellowship recognises Dr Aronson's achievements during his presidency of the Society (2008–2009), as well as work to support the Society's mission to promote and advance pharmacology, including clinical pharmacology.
Dr Aronson commented:
"I have been a member of the British Pharmacological Society, the leading European society in the field, for almost all of my career, and have found it a constant source of inspiration and support. I was therefore delighted, while hugely surprised, to be offered Honorary Fellowship by colleagues whose work I have long respected and admired."
