Professor Chris Griffiths joins in a senior academic role associated with Jesus College and Associate Professor Gail Hayward is appointed to a senior academic role and Governing Body fellowship of Exeter College.

We are delighted that we have appointed to two new collegiate-affiliated senior academic roles in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences (NDPCHS).

Professor Chris Griffiths joins NDPCHS on 1 May from the Wolfson Institute of Population Health at Queen Mary University of London.

Professor Griffiths has over 25 years of experience in applied health research in primary care, focussing on respiratory health, air pollution, infectious disease, and domestic violence. He leads the CHILL cohort (Children’s Health in London and Luton) evaluating the impacts of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone on children’s health and development. With Aziz Sheikh, he co-leads the new Centre for Applied Respiratory Research Innovation and Impact (CARRii), focussing on reducing NHS respiratory winter pressures and health inequalities.

Chris says: ‘I’m delighted to be joining colleagues at NDPCHS, one of the most talented groups of researchers in primary care. I’m looking forward to developing new collaborations to take forward common areas of interest, and most importantly to have an impact on health nationally and beyond.’

Associate Professor Gail Hayward, has been appointed to a new Clinical Associate Professorship in our Department in association with Exeter College. A practicing GP, she has over 10 years' experience leading teams in Healthtech research. She is currently Clinical Director of the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Community Healthcare, and leading the network of 14 HealthTech Research Centres across England. Her research focuses on developing and evaluating Healthtech which is fit for purpose in community settings, particularly in the area of infection. She is Chief Investigator of the DURATION-UTI, EVOLUTION and TOUCAN studies, which together aim to improve diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections, a condition which affects over half of all women.

Gail says: ‘I am really pleased to be taking up this new role in Department. It is a fantastic opportunity to build on our team’s close collaborations across the University to improve diagnosis and care for people in the community.’

Professor Sir Aziz Sheikh, Head of Department of NDPCHS said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Chris to the Department and to celebrate Gail’s new appointment. Chris brings valuable experience from his work at Queen Mary University of London, and Gail’s leadership in community healthcare research has already made real impact. These appointments will strengthen our Department’s work to improve health through primary care research.’
