We are delighted to invite applications from final year medical students for the Martin Lawrence Scholarship,

A reciprocal exchange initiative enabling medical students from Oxford and Nordic institutions to experience primary care practices in their respective countries, fostering cross-cultural learning and comparative healthcare insights.

The award was established in the memory of Dr Martin Lawrence; A renowned academic and acting leader of Oxford's Primary Care Department, whose brilliant career was cut short by his untimely passing in 1999 at just 55 years of age. Known for his passion for teaching and dedication to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, Dr Lawrence also had personal ties with the Nordic countries. This scholarship continues his legacy, fostering collaboration and mutual learning between Oxford and Nordic medical communities.

Recently, Dr Sophie Park, who leads Undergraduate Teaching at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences (NDPCHS), and Dr Alison Convey from the department's Undergraduate Teaching Team, made a visit to Martin's family home in Chipping Norton. Reflecting on the visit, Dr Alison Convey says:

I won't forget the afternoon we spent with Annette Lawrence, we heard the most amazing stories about her husband, Martin: pioneering GP, original thinker, accomplished scholar and international traveller. Clearly one of life's truly remarkable "renaissance" achievers, who would have gone on to do so much more had he not died so awfully young. Annette, now in her 80s, is determined and passionate about giving students the opportunity to learn, explore and develop an international outlook. It was a wonderful meeting with an extraordinary person.

Martin's illustrious career was marked by several notable achievements. He delivered the William Pickles lecture at the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1988, entitled 'All Together Now'. He also co-authored 'Quality Improvement by Peer Review' with Richard Grol and edited 'Medical Audit in Primary Health Care' in collaboration with Theo Schofield.
