NEXUS highlighted at European Lung Foundation Webinar
19 February 2026

The European Lung Foundation, a NEXUS partner, recently hosted the Breathe Clean Air Patient Conference 2026, focusing on the health impacts of indoor air pollution.
The webinar brought together experts and patient speakers to explore how everyday environments - including mould, humidity and household heating and cooking - affect respiratory health, alongside practical actions to improve air quality.
NEXUS was highlighted during the session as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen understanding of air pollution and its impacts on health.
NEXUS at UN-Hosted Clean Air Event
24 February 2026

NEXUS co-lead Professor Chris Griffiths and Monica Fletcher OBE recently attended the Pathways to Breathe Clean Air: Ultra Low Emission Zones event, hosted in collaboration with the United Nations and the London School of Economics.
The event brought together policymakers, researchers and advocates to explore how low and ultra-low emission zones can improve air quality and reduce health inequalities. Low-emission zones are widely used to restrict high-polluting vehicles and improve urban air quality .
This discussion aligns closely with the aims of NEXUS, highlighting the importance of evidence-based approaches to tackling air pollution and supporting effective policy solutions.
NEXUS Featured on Environmental Law Explored Podcast
25 September 2025

NEXUS co-lead Professor Greg Evans recently featured on the Environmental Law Explored podcast, discussing the growing importance of non-exhaust vehicle emissions, including particles from brake wear, tyre wear and road dust.
The episode highlights how these sources are becoming an increasingly significant part of traffic-related air pollution, while remaining under-researched in terms of their impacts on human health.
As Professor Evans notes, “we still don’t know enough about human health impacts - first we need to quantify what people actually breathe.”
This discussion reflects the core aims of the NEXUS programme, which is working to strengthen the evidence base and support policy development in this area.
The episode is available on major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.
Launch of NEXUS

September 2025 – Launch of NEXUS
NEXUS, a new international research partnership funded by the UK Medical Research Council (MRC), launched in September 2025 to investigate the health impacts of non-exhaust vehicle emissions — particles generated by brake wear, tyre wear and road surface abrasion. As exhaust emissions decline worldwide, these largely unregulated particles are becoming an increasingly important source of traffic-related air pollution, particularly in urban environments. Bringing together a consortium of 17 academic institutions and eight partner organisations, NEXUS will combine expertise from fields including aerosol science, toxicology, epidemiology, data science and health policy to strengthen research capacity, advance understanding of non-exhaust emissions, and generate the evidence needed to inform future environmental and public health policy.
