Research interests
My primary research interest is in human-computer interaction, in particular the interdisciplinary development and evaluation of technology to support health and wellbeing across the lifespan. I use qualitative methods to explore how people use (and don't use) technology in the wild. I have particular interests in the application and potential of 'slow' and disruptive technologies.
My doctoral research at UCL explored the role of digital tools in supporting maternal wellbeing in the context of low risk first time pregnancy; this involved the critical interrogation of traditional paradigms of evidence and the application of novel methods to develop and evaluate person-centred digital resources. My thesis was passed with no corrections.
Current work
Within NDPCHS, I contribute to a number of projects, namely an NIHR Programme Grant (SuMMiT-D), led by Prof Andrew Farmer, exploring the potential of text messages to support medication adherence in the context of living with type 2 diabetes. I am also the qualitative lead on work investigating the acceptability and implementation of a remote monitoring tool to improve outcomes for people with COPD (EDGE2).
Teaching and supervision
I have been involved in academic teaching across multi-disciplinary health care sciences for the past 10 years, teaching at undergraduate and post graduate level, mainly focusing on research methods for psychology and health care sciences. As a Junior Research Fellow at Kellogg College, I act as College Advisor to a number of students; I am an academic supervisor to EBHC MSc students; I work across disciplinary boundaries, often examining and working with Computer Science DPhil students who are using qualitative methods.
