Summary
Previous research investigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the general population has yielded conflicting results. Many of these studies rely on questionnaires and surveys, which may not capture a comprehensive understanding of mental health and can have limitations in their findings. This study aims to shed light on how the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced people's seeking of mental health support by analysing data from various healthcare settings in England, including general practitioner consultations, emergency departments, and calls to NHS 111 helpline. Furthermore, this study seeks to explore whether different phases of the pandemic, such as lockdowns and the lifting of restrictions, are associated with changes in how the English population accesses mental health services, and whether these patterns differ across different age groups.
