Summary
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused serious complications in people with obesity, the Government announced an English strategy in July 2020 to address obesity. Part of this strategy was a national enhanced service (ES), an opt-in scheme that paid GPs to refer patients to weight management programmes. We will conduct an interrupted time series analysis using data from general practices in England to map patient referrals rates in relation to the start date of the Enhanced Service (September 2021). Outcomes assessed at the population level include the proportion of referral codes for (1) all weight management programmes, (2) the non-diabetes related weight management programmes, (3) the diabetes prevention programme, and (4) the diabetes remission programme. Outcomes assessed at the practice-level relative to the total population who received a referral code will include weight, HbA1c, and blood pressure.
