Welcome to CARRii
The Centre for Applied Respiratory Research, Innovation and Impact (CARRii) is dedicated to transforming respiratory health across the UK. Through pioneering research, innovation and real-world implementation, we drive meaningful change where it matters most.
Respiratory diseases and infections, including asthma and COPD, remain among the leading causes of hospital admissions, avoidable NHS demand and health inequalities, yet they continue to be under-prioritised. CARRii was established to take a different approach - reducing winter pressures on the NHS and addressing inequalities in lung health by ensuring that high-quality research is translated into innovation, implementation and lasting impact.
Why now?
The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated what is possible when research, healthcare, industry and communities come together with a shared purpose. New evidence was generated, adopted and implemented at unprecedented speed. We cannot afford to lose that momentum.
Respiratory disease remains one of the greatest - and most preventable pressures on the NHS. CARRii brings together researchers, clinicians, policymakers, industry partners and people with lived experience to accelerate collaboration, strengthen implementation and ensure that innovation reaches the people and communities who need it most.
CARRii is not a traditional centre. It’s a dynamic collaboration.
We are a UK-wide network connecting expertise across academic research, frontline healthcare, public health, data science, industry, policy and patient and public involvement. By bringing together complementary strengths, we are building a new model for respiratory health - one where collaboration turns research into real-world impact.

Our Research Themes and Platforms
CARRii's work is driven by three strategic themes that address some of the biggest challenges in respiratory health, supporting our mission to reduce winter pressures on the NHS and address inequalities in lung health.
Each theme brings together multidisciplinary expertise from researchers, clinicians, policymakers, industry partners and people with lived experience, ensuring that high-quality research is translated into innovation, implementation and meaningful impact.
Supporting our themes are four specialist platforms that provide the foundations for everything we do. Together, they strengthen research capacity, champion patient and public involvement, harness data and methodology, and accelerate collaboration across the respiratory research community.
By connecting expertise across themes and platforms, CARRii creates opportunities for collaboration that improve respiratory health and deliver real-world benefits for patients, the public and healthcare systems.

Within our network, you'll find
Patient & Public voice
At the heart of CARRii’s work is the active involvement of those who experience respiratory conditions. We are building one of the largest Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) networks in the UK, and we invite you to be a part of it. By collaborating directly with patients and the public, we ensure that lived experiences, insights, and perspectives shape the future of healthcare. Your involvement will help us push the boundaries of PPIE to drive real-world change.
Industry partnerships
Industry collaboration is vital to driving respiratory health innovation. We’re inviting industry leaders, innovators and stakeholders from across various sectors - healthcare and beyond to partner with us in shaping the future of respiratory care. Together, we can work to reduce the burden of respiratory diseases and deliver meaningful solutions that impact lives on a global scale.
