WHO WE ARE
We are a consortium of researchers from Oxford, Cambridge, Strathclyde, Warwick, Queen Mary University London and City St George’s University London. We work in the fields of public health, environmental sustainability, policy research, deliberative methods and software development.
Professor Jean Adams, University of Cambridge
Jean is a Professor of Dietary Public Health in the MRC Epidemiology Unit. Jean is leading work package 3 and contributing to work package 4.
Fran is Sustain’s Commercial Determinants Coordinator, specialising in supporting governments to champion children’s health through advertising restrictions on unhealthy food and drinks.
Ally (Alistair) Brown, University of Strathclyde
Ally is a Research Associate on work package 1, based in the School of Social Work and Social Policy and the Centre for Health Policy.
Valentina Caldart, University of Oxford
Valentina is the data lead at HESTIA where she manages the flow of data onto the platform, and oversees the data-focused projects. Valentina is contributing to work package 2.
Dr Michael Clark, University of Oxford
Mike is an Associate Professor in the Smith School, leading the Sustainable Food Solutions Group. He is contributing to work package 2.
Dr Lexi Earl, University of Oxford
Lexi is the THRIVING Food Futures project manager. She also runs the OMS Programme on the Future of Food.
Dr Elizabeth Eveleigh, University of Cambridge
Elizabeth is a Research Associate of Dietary Public Health in the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge. Elizabeth is contributing to work package 3, developing a typology of policy functions to support healthy, sustainable and equitable diets.
Dr Emma Hill, University of Strathclyde
Dr Emma Hill leading work package 1 with Prof Kat Smith. She is a Lecturer in Social Policy in Strathclyde’s School of Social Work and Social Policy and a member of the Centre for Health Policy.
Professor EJ Milner-Gulland, University of Oxford
EJ is the Tasso Leventis Professor of Biodiversity in the Department of Biology and leads the Interdisciplinary Centre for Conservation Science. EJ is contributing to work package 2.
Professor Oyinlola Oyebode, Queen Mary University London
Professor of Public Health, and leader of the Centre for Public Health and Policy, Lola will be leading work package 5 field trials (with Rachel Pechey) and contributing to work package 2.
Dr Rachel Pechey, University of Oxford
Rachel is leading work package 5 field trials, in conjunction with Professor Lola Oyebode. Rachel is an Associate Professor and leads the Food Purchasing theme within the Sustainable Healthy Food Group.
Dr Joseph Poore, University of Oxford
Joseph leads the HESTIA project at the Oxford Martin School. HESTIA is an open-access platform that stores standardised data on agricultural production. Joseph is contributing to work package 2.
Professor Mike Rayner, University of Oxford
A professor in the Nuffield Department of Population Health, Mike is leading the development of the Nutrient and Environmental Profiling Model in work package 2.
Dr Christian Reynolds, City St George’s University
Christian is a Reader in Food Policy at the Centre for Food Policy and will be leading work package 3, alongside Jean Adams, as well as contributing to work package 4.
Dr Ian Saunders, University of Warwick
Ian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick. With extensive experience in managing software development projects, he will focus on supporting the development and evaluation of digital tools as part of work packages 2 and 5.
Professor Peter Scarborough, University of Oxford
Pete is the principal investigator of the THRIVING Food Futures project. He is based in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, where he leads the Sustainable Healthy Food Group.
Professor Katherine Smith, University of Strathclyde
Katherine is leading work package 1 with Dr Emma Hill. She is a Professor of Public Health Policy, where she is Co-Director of the the Centre for Health Policy and the Scottish Health Equity Research Unit (SHERU).
Professor Thijs van Rens, University of Warwick
Leading work package 2 with Mark Rayner, Thijs is a Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick. Thijs is also contributing to work package 5.
Professor Christina Vogel, City St George’s University
Christina is leading work package 4 with Martin White and contributing to WP3. Christina is the Director of the Centre for Food Policy, Professor of Food Policy and a registered nutritionist.
Ruth is a campaign manager with Sustain, leading the alliance’s work on tackling climate change through food at a local and national government level.
Professor Martin White, University of Cambridge
Martin leads research within the Population Health Interventions Programme in the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge. Martin is leading on work package 4, alongside Professor Christina Vogel.
