Department DPhil training programme
The department runs an in-house training programme for all of our postgraduate students; primarily run by senior members of the department. We are always working on adding sessions to the programme (based on what staff members are able to offer and what sessions students may request). We currently offer sessions covering communications; statistical skills; qualitative research skills; clinical trials; grant proposals and more.
Medical Sciences Division training
All of our students also have access to a wide range of free training courses run by the Medical Sciences Division. These courses are based on the Vitae-Concordat agreement and in line with the European Commission HR Excellence in Research to maximise the research practice and professional development of researchers in UK; all courses fall under Vitae’s four main categories:
- Research skills
- Communication skills
- Teaching skills
- Career development
The department can also make a small financial contribution to students who may not have other funds available to attend paid-for external training sessions. Students must make an application for such funds and each application will be assessed individually.
You will complete a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) during your first term of study with the support of your supervisor. Your TNA sets out a plan for your training during the DPhil. You will have the opportunity to review your TNA regularly during your course. You can download an example
