A Better Workplace Group Initiative

The Department aims to encourage and support part-time researchers to thrive in their careers and progress to senior posts. The Better Workplace Part-time and Family Friendly Working Group has developed a new guide for prospective and current research staff and their managers to use in supporting this goal. Included in the guide is advice for managers developing a new post, new starter inductions, personal development reviews, regrading and promotion.

The idea for part-time worker guidelines emerged after we received feedback from a line-manager that regrading was a particular challenge since the goals and requirements set out for full-time staff also applied to part-time staff, and this was somewhat unrealistic. We also wanted to dispel the myth that it’s challenging to get a promotion when you don’t work full-time.

Dr Veronika Williams, Co-lead of the PT and Family Friendly Working Group.

You can download the guidelines from the department intranet, where you will also find a wide range of HR and personnel development resources.
