Resources for primary care practitioners
Helping patients to reduce their salt or saturated fat intake
The patient information booklets ‘Cutting down on saturated fat’ and ‘Cutting down on salt’, as well as the accompanying nurse checklists have been developed based on two current research projects of the Health Behaviours Team: The PCShop study and the SaltSwap study.
The aim is to support healthcare professionals in providing evidence-based recommendations on how to reduce the intake of saturated fat to help lower LDL cholesterol and salt to reduce blood pressure. These dietary changes will help to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Supportive and effective conversations about weight management referrals
Primary care clinicians are encouraged by guidelines to offer people with obesity a free referral to a weight management service, like Slimming World or WW.
Due to the government’s new obesity strategy ability to offer these referrals is increasing. However clinicians have stated that they are unsure how to make these offers, as they’re not sure what to say.
In this video we provide specific, evidence-based, information about what to say when making an offer of referral. Following this advice will support clinicians to have supportive and effective conversations.
