Meeting 1: Fundamentals of Research Leadership
Run as a residential meeting over 5 days in Oxford.
The meeting will examine the fundamental concepts of leadership. Participants will explore some of the core theories of leadership, develop a better understanding of the strengths and weakness of these and a practical understanding of how these how leadership models can be applied within research contexts. This will also encourage personal development through self-reflection and critical awareness.
Participants will complete an online psychometric test in their own time before the programme commences. The results will be fed back in a face to face, private, one to one coaching session with a qualified coach. The psychometric test will allow for development and discussion of key themes in leadership such as team working, emotional intelligence and derailers to achieving goals and key targets.
Participants will learn in small groups alongside tutor-led sessions and experiential learning from established research leaders.
This meeting will enable participants to develop:
- A clearer understanding of their own leadership styles, abilities and application in research environments.
- An introduction to key components of leadership and how it can be applied in their own advanced scholarship.
- An understanding of the potential role of personality preferences on leadership styles through one-to-one coaching.
- An introduction to the applicability of emotional intelligence in practical research leadership.
- The formation of action learning sets to facilitate longer-term learning and peer support.
Meeting 2: Organisational Research Leadership
Run as a residential meeting over 4 days in Oxford.
This meeting will begin to examine hands-on organisational leadership in research settings.
Participants will explore some of the core elements of organisational leadership and how this can apply to research environments. Established research leaders will provide participants with insights through practical learning. Participants will extend their learning from the Fundamentals of Research Leadership meeting, have a deeper understanding of their leadership style and explore how this learning can be applied to those they lead, teams and wider research organisations.
The meeting will encourage the development of skills to support organisational leadership through self-reflection, group discussions and enhanced self-awareness.
Participants will learn in small groups alongside tutor-led sessions and practical learning from established research leaders.
This meeting will enable participants to develop:
- A systematic understanding of the critical components of organisational leadership and how it can be applied to research organisations.
- A better understanding of the skills needed to construct, manage and sustain research groups.
- The key elements needed to build and maintain successful teams.
- Techniques needed to manage dynamic and conflicting challenges within research teams.
Meeting 3: Strategic Research Leadership
Run as a residential meeting over 4 days in Oxford.
This meeting will provide practical strategic learning and its application to research settings.
In this meeting, participants will develop an understanding of research strategy development. Participants will explore some of the "real-world" challenges that research leaders face. Participants will gain insights into the skills and techniques needed to overcome some of these challenges and implement strategy into their research ambitions.
The meeting will encourage the development of strategic leadership through enhanced skill development. Participants will learn in small groups alongside tutor-led sessions and practical learning from established leaders.
This meeting will enable participants to develop:
- An awareness of strategic research leadership.
- The core elements of forming and using strategy in research environments.
- The “real-world” skills to challenge and implement in strategy in research.
- Explore how their research leadership profile can grow through enhanced dissemination, productivity and working with the media.
