Leadership Learning Pathway
Purpose
Staff and DPhil students are supported in NDPCHS to develop their leadership practice. This, in turn, will support career, personal and team development and model the Department’s values, meaning that there is a consistent, positive, and inclusive experience of work across the Department.
Who is it for?
Whether a new line manager, an aspiring leader or actively leading a research group or project, the Leadership Learning Pathway has been designed to be accessible to many, at all career stages. It is open to all Department members, including Professional and Support Staff, Clinical Trials Unit, Research and Academic staff, and DPhil Students.
How is it run?
Each term you can curate your own pathway by deciding which Departmental sessions to attend. We run 2-3 sessions each term facilitated by either department leaders or an external facilitator.
Resources and further signposting to courses and training will be included on this Canvas site. Click on the term theme below to get started.

How does the LLP fit with central University programmes and courses?
People and Organisational Development (POD) offer many development courses, reflecting the breadth of roles and experience at Oxford. The NDPCHS Leadership Learning Pathway is designed to supplement POD courses and help you apply your learning in our departmental setting. There are many benefits to participating in courses offered by POD, including the opportunity to meet and learn with leaders from across the university. These courses are popular and often get booked up in advance. If a course is fully booked or not currently running, you are encouraged to register your interest.
Recommended courses:
- The Confident Manager series (open to all) - a flexible and innovative programme from POD focused on people management excellence, where participants shape their learning journeys around key areas of relevant to their role and context.
- The Workload Management Programme (open to PSS) - this programme focuses on proactively identifying signs of overwhelm, fostering supportive teams and equitable workload cultures, encouraging open conversations about capacity, and aligning workloads with organisational goals.
- Project Management Essentials (open to all) - equips university staff with practical skills and a clear understanding of how effective project management - covering resources, timelines, collaboration, risk, quality, and stakeholder communication - drives success in academic settings.
Divisional Development Courses
- MSD Inclusive Leadership Programme: (open to all) offers a challenging and reflective space for academic and professional services leaders to explore different approaches to core aspects of good leadership: communication and relationship-building.
- MPLS EDI Training Programme: (open to all) offers a series of interactive sessions designed to build understanding, confidence and practical skills in creating a more inclusive, equitable and supportive workplace culture across the University
University Mentoring and Coaching Scheme
Throughout the LLP, you might find it useful to supplement your learning by working with a coach or mentor.
Mentoring: You can approach a colleague directly to request informal mentoring. We recommend you complete the Mentoring for Development e-learning programme before you start your mentoring journey. You can also find plenty of helpful resources as part of the e-learning. Alternatively, Professional Services Staff can find a formal mentor through the University's mentoring scheme, accessible here.
Coaching: Coaching is one of the most effective learning and development practices. University staff can benefit from one-to-one coaching, facilitated by the Oxford University Coaching Network (OCN). Comprising qualified staff volunteers, this network offers coaching services during working hours, covering a broad spectrum of work-related issues such as personal development, relationship improvement, and career progression.
