The Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences is host to the world’s longest established and largest electronic health records databases. AI and machine learning are being used to explore these data, and to develop prediction tools that can underpin a new era of precision medicine, leading to more effective prevention and treatment. This theme will generate powerful new evidence from electronic health records.

Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science:

  • The Institute will partner with the new Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science to apply new technologies to data sets and the latest scientific evidence, and to develop practical tools for clinicians.
  • The Bennett Institute turns huge datasets into traditional academic research papers and build live, interactive data-driven tools and services for everyone to use.  Their research covers a range of topics including: innovative informatics methods; variation in clinical care; behaviour change; research integrity; policy analysis; and more. Resources within the Bennett Institute include:
    • OpenSAFELY is a secure analytics platform for electronic health records in the NHS, created to deliver urgent results during the global COVID-19 emergency.
    • OpenPrescribing lets any interested user explore NHS GP prescribing behaviour across the whole country, down to the level of individual doses and brands, of individual drugs, at individual practices, each month.
    • Our TrialsTracker project has produced a wide range of tools and initiatives to monitor and improve clinical trial reporting.
